Darrell Griffith Athletic Center to Open Soon at West End School

Congrats to all the work our partner La Grange-based Encompass Develop, Design & Construct put into this amazing project.

In the News:

A grand opening is planned for October for the Darrell Griffith Athletic Center at West End School. The center, supported by more than $2 million in donations, bears the name of the man who led the University of Louisville to its first-ever NCAA Tournament championship in 1980.

“I know what life is like for these kids because I grew up on the same streets they are,” said Griffith. “I know the challenges they face, but I also know what can be accomplished through hard work. I want these kids to know that opportunities exist.”
Griffith, who grew up just blocks away, attended Virginia Avenue Elementary School, housed in the building that is now West End School. He’s a member of the WES Board of Directors.
Griffith, who is a member of the 2014 National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame class, said seeing his name on the building is an honor he never could have imagined. “You’d never think that someone would want to name a building after you,” Griffith said. “That’s the ultimate.”
The center will include a Darrell Griffith Gallery housing photographs, game footage and memorabilia from Griffith’s illustrious career.
“The Darrell Griffith Athletic Center is so much more than a building – it’s about letting our boys know they deserve a home and they deserve a home gym,” said Paul Perconti, chairman of the West End School Board of Directors. “That’s why we’re so grateful for the financial support we’ve already received from the community and the continued support that will help us cross the finish line for this important project.”
The Darrell Griffith Athletic Center will allow students at West End School to host their first-ever home basketball games this fall. The nearly 90 students at West End School will be using the facility on a daily basis, as a practice court and recreation facility. It will host programs, games and tournaments for neighboring schools and organizations.
La Grange-based Encompass Develop, Design & Construct has overseen the project management effort, donating many services and materials for the project. Every contractor and vendor on the project has donated time or materials for the job.
Encompass started its relationship with West End School a couple of years ago, managing the remodeling and creation of additional dorm rooms and overseeing a number of other renovations.
“At Encompass, we have a passion for making a positive, long-term impact in the communities where we live and work,” said John Stewart, Encompass President and Chief Executive Officer. “The West End School takes that passion for impact literally. This is not just a building that we have the opportunity to work on – the West End School is building boys’ lives and that will ultimately transform the community.”
