A grand opening celebration will be held Wednesday for the Darrell Griffith Athletic Center at West End School. U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, Darrell Griffith and other local dignitaries will help celebrate the opening and watch
the key being handed over to students. The public is invited to attend and get a first-hand look at the facility.
The center, supported by more than $2 million in donations, bears the name of the man who led the University of Louisville to its first-ever NCAA Tournament championship in 1980. Griffith, who grew up just blocks away, attended Virginia Avenue Elementary School, housed in the building that is now West End School.
West End School is a free, private, college preparatory elementary and middle school for at-risk young men. West End School was founded in 2005 and has 90 students. The new center will allow students to host their first-ever home basketball games.
