Product code: Six early store readers from the 40s and 50s

These early easy readers taught reading to second graders by emphasizing phonics. Utilizing short chapters and charmingly simple stories, these books helped children find a love for reading. I love the illustrations, especially in the two oldest books. This is a fun collection.

All of the covers are intact but in used condition; each book's pages are appropriately aged but not fragile. All of the books include word lists at the back, showing new words that have been mastered. From newest to oldest, here are descriptions of marks or flaws.

Fun With Our Friends. 1957, 1962 edition. Scott Foresman. The title page has been torn out of this one, stories include trips to the amusement park, to the zoo, to the farm, and putting together a barbecue with dad. I remember this one.

We Are Neighbors. 1948, 1953 edition. Ginn & Co. Stamped on the front page by a school in Vermont. Stories about friends, neighbors, workers, poems and familiar tales.

Down Our Street. 1939, 1945 edition. The Macmillan Company. Also stamped on the inside cover from a Vermont school. One page in the book is torn, one corner of a page is torn, and there are a couple of small tears (1/4”) on other pages. Still, the book is very usable and readable. The first page in the back of the word lists by chapter has been torn out. The stories include seasons of the year, going to a farm, going to a circus, and familiar stories.

Down the Road. 1945. Silver Burnett Co. It looks as if a library pocket was removed from the inside first page. Pages are in good condition. Stories of animals, Granfather's visit, circus clowns, a picnic.

Along The Way. 1940. John C. Winston Co. While the cover is intact, the front and back boards have been pulled away from the pages. This can easily be remedied with glue. Stories are of pets, rides, Indians, winter in the woods, and others. The store illustrations are whimsical and beautiful.

Happy Times. 1938. American Book Company.
Some little imp enjoyed coloring a bit on this title page. That's the only flaw I see here. Again, I love these older illustrations.

All in all, this is a nice little collection of very usable and enjoyable books. I can ship them book rate if you prefer.
