These are the standard or regular size pads - the longer/wider version is listed as the 'XL' version.

If you've seen any of my Jnat or Honing videos on YouTube, chances are you've seen one of these rubber Honing Pads under my hones. A friend gave me one long ago, and after trying many different holders and pads, I keep coming back to using one of these simple rubber slabs.

Thing is - not all rubber is created equal and it took a while to isolate and source the right thickness, hardness and exact material. Not surprisingly, there are many different types of rubber with many different qualities out there. I did find exactly what I was looking for though. Because so many guys have asked me for one - I've cut up a few extras to list here on Etsy.

For me - these black slabs are as perfect as it gets. They have the right amount of give, they grip my stones well and they clean up easily.
When I lap, I use two of them to support my diamond plate in the bottom of the sink; they protect the sink and they grab the plate very well too. If I drop one, it just hits the floor, nothing breaks or store chips.

I cut these here by hand, so the sides aren't perfectly square. But they all work just fine, which is the main point of concern.
When you arrive, they're usually a little 'curved' - soaking in hot water followed by being put on a flat countertop will cure that. But it might take a few cycles of hot/flat to get the curve ironed out.

NOTE
These pads should be stored separately from your hones. Do not store your stones on these pads, or in close proximity to them. They are cut from real rubber, which is ideal for our needs but real rubber also gives off that new-tire fragrance. In typical use those fumes just dissipate and they are innocuous.
However - extended exposure to these pads in a closed environment like a box or a bag may cause a color shift in some stones.

Petroleum based oils may affect the rubber in a negative way, but my Tomo Glide honing oil is fine to use with these rubber pads.
