Product code: Antique Redware store Stoneware Pottery Finger Whiskey Jug, Ovoid
This is a handsome early redware finger jug in an ovoid shape with a pulled handle. Please excuse the glare in the photos. It appears to be a little less than a half gallon. It has a nice thick collar around the mouth. There is some modern thin cork inserted, possibly to fit a stopper. There is a small area of scratching (see photo) and some firing flaws. I do store not know the maker. It measures 8 1/8" tall and about 5 3/4" at its widest point.
Ovoid jugs are the earliest form. Around 1850, potters began using the beehive shape because it was easier to pack side by side for transporting and quicker to make.
