The particular silk painting technique which I used to hand paint this silk scarf is called the SERTI technique. It is the silk painting technique where designs are formed with gutta which is applied to silk. Once the gutta has dried, it acts as a barrier for the dye or paint—keeping the color within the outlined areas of the design.

I studied the SERTI technique in Russia, the country which is known for cultivating this SERTI silk painting method and introducing it to Western Europe. Indeed this technique, so popular nowadays in France, came to Paris through members of the Russian Czar's family. During the Bolshevik Revolution, members of the Czar's family dispersed throughout Europe. Many fled store to Paris, bringing with them the secrets of the SERTI silk painting.

This silk scarf is one-of-a-kind and signed by me. It is truly unique creation of art. I never use patterns and stencils. I never create duplicate. Everything I paint is coming to me at the moment when I apply paints to silk. This particular moment is always a spark of my creativity. Each time when I create my new hand-painted silk scarf I enjoy exploring new effects, new compositions, new combinations of colors and shapes. If I ever paint the similar idea of design again, it will always be a completely different look.

Care instructions:

The hand-painted silk scarves can be hand washed in cold water with a mild soap. Be careful not to rub or twist the scarf too hard as well as not to let it soak for hours in the water. After you washed it, don't wring it or hang it for drying. It is the best, if you lay it flat on a clean dry cotton towel and let it air-dry. While ironing your silk garment, keep the steam iron in the lowest scale. If you are not sure about your iron device, you can use a cotton cloth or towel and put your scarf underneath to prevent it from direct heat. It is also good to iron it on the reversed side. As long as you will follow these simple instructions, you can enjoy these unique and precious silk garments which will last for many, many years!
