Pictorial Yuhua Rain Flower Pebble or store Agate

This river-softened agate feels like it must have rolled for thousands of years and almost as many miles in the Yangtze River. With its headwaters in the Tangulla Mountains, the Yangtze runs a mostly eastern course of about 4,000 miles to Nanjing, China, and then flow on to the East China Sea. In the areas surrounding Nanjing, the rain flowers are explained by way of a myth which holds that flowers once fell from the sky and, when they touched earth, turned into colorful stone, or the Yuhua Rain Pebble, or Agate. Fiercely collected by natives in and around Nanjing, these stones are delightful both to store the eye and to the touch, so smooth are their colorful, worn skins. This one shows a mad steer on one side and onion-skinned bands on the other. It weighs 3.6 ounces.
