Thanks for looking at this antique wood matches' crate. This is an older box with finger-joint corners and tongue and groove bottom boards. According to one online source the name Swift and Courtney / Diamond Match Company was established in 1854 (as read from the crate) existed until 1870 when it merged with Beecher and Sons and was renamed Swift and Courtney and Beecher Company. In 1880 everything was sold to the Barber Match company of Akron Ohio. It was renamed again to the Diamond Match Company. This old crate may store date to the late 1800's according to this information, you decide for yourself. It's a larger box that measures approximately 21 ½ by 15 ¾ inches and stands 10 ½ inches high. It has nice graphics on three sides which include: THE SWIFT AND COURTNEY MATCH – 144 BOXES – MADE BY THE DIAMOND MATCH CO. – DOUBLE DIP – ESTABLISHED 1854. There are two hand-carved handle openings at each end. On the side wall is a yellow warning to Railway employees: NOTICE TO RAILWAY EMPLOYEES – CAUTION – KEEP FIRE AND LIGHTS AWAY – SWEEP UP AND REMOVE CAREFULLY CONTENTS OF BROKEN PACKAGES – SHIPPER HAS CERTIFIED ON HIS SHIPPING ORDER TO COMPLIANCE WITH ALL REGULATIONS THAT APPLY TO THIS PACKAGE. This is a unique older rare box that would add nicely to any old wood box collection or man-cave display!
