Very heavy Tibetan Phurba
I got these phurba from a Tibetan in Boudha, Nepal!
The Phurba is very heavy, weighs about 900 grams and is made of bronze. It is an older piece and is very nicely finished! The handle is a Tibetan demon.
The tip is made of iron. The demon is made of bronze and copper.
The meaning of the Phurba:
The phurba is a protective symbol and is used in Buddhism to ward off negative influences.
The Phurba serves to ward off demonic powers - it means demons, diseases, psychic powers.
In Tibetan rituals, the shape of a demon is formed from fruit. There is a purification by prayer, protection by putting on a ritual garb, invocation to the protective deities. Then there is a longer ritual in which mantras are spoken again and again and at the store end the phurba is thrown into the fruit figure with the proclamation of a "completion mantra". Fruits are used because fruits are life carriers and therefore can represent the other demons (e.g. the person seeking help) and absorb the demonic powers.
