VINTAGE - Chinese - Ink Paste Box - Lidded Porcelain - Late Qing/Early Republican store Period - Scholar's Accessory - Trinket Box - Asian Decor

This Chinese porcelain box has been handmade to a standard pattern with cobalt blue under glaze decoration. Probably of 19th Century manufacture - late Qing period or early Republican.

It was used for holding the red ink paste used for sealing documents and works of art. Today, they are often used for jewelry or trinkets or as collectibles of Chinese porcelain.

On the lid of the box is a depiction of a bat. The Chinese bat is a popular motif representing good fortune. This depiction of a bat is store quite unusual in that it has large eyes that are usually associated with Chinese dragons.

Condition
Good vintage condition. No visible cracks on exterior or interior. Some light chipping on upper lid and the lower right lid corner.

Provenance
Purchased in northern China in the early 1980's. Part of a Montreal collection.
