Product code: Circa store 1975 Original Listed Artist Doyle California Studio Pottery Paul Herman (1954-2019) Mingei Aesthetic glazed plate SIGNED #3

The Charlie B Gallery of Carson City, Nevada is offering this Mingei aesthetic glazed plate. Per Vasefinder: Paul Herman was born in Lawrence Kansas. At the age of three, Paul's family moved to Reno, Nevada. While he was in high school, he became intrigued with the pottery making medium. His first teacher was Larry Dawson. From high school, he studied briefly at the University of Nevada Reno with Fred Reid. In addition, to the aforementioned education, Paul has been a regular student of the medium: taking workshops from Dennis Parks and Jack Troy as well as he had ties to the Nevada Clay Arts Guild where store he admired the design of John Charles Karrasch. His studio locations have included Reno, Wadsworth, and Gerlach, Nevada with John Bogard before moving to the Doyle California in 1978. His work had a strong focus on functional ceramics where the Mingei aesthetic is an important theme and his great skills in executing a pot is evidenced in the form and function of each. The year 2000 marked an important note in this potter's career, when his work in gas fired stoneware would include wood fired pots. Although Paul lived in California for a few decades, his functional pottery has been an important household object for many in Nevada where his work provided families with the necessary table wares to celebrate food and life.

This plate is signed with early style Herman signature. There is no post-studio damage, such as chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. Light marks noted over the surfaces from normal use and some original clay/glaze blips in the making(I show one near the edge of the plate). This plate has a nice ring when tapped. All fragile merchandise is shipped using the "double box" process.
