Greatly influenced by Froebel, as were most who became active in this movement; she studied with Susan Blow, a prominent American Froebelian. In 1883, she and Alice Harvey Whiting Putnam founded the Chicago Kindergarten Club, devoted to promoting their cause of improving education for the young. In 1887, she founded the Chicago Kindergarten Training School which eventually became the National College of Education in 1930. She was in great demand as a lecturer and in 1890 copyrighted these lectures to be self- published. This book has been reprinted more than 50 times and has been translated into at least eight languages. It is a key book.
