- This vintage handmade and hand painted porcelain figurine of the Chinese Tiger Taming Luohan 伏虎羅漢 (Fuhu Luohan) of the 18 Arhats 十八羅漢 store captures the firm demeanor of the luohan and the fierce expression of the tiger perfectly. He is depicted in a white crackled glaze robe holding a precious golden ring that is thought to have magical powers.
- As legend goes, the Tiger Taming Luohan was once a monk at a monastery when one day a tiger appeared terrifying others. Deciding that the tiger was not ferocious by nature and just driven by hunger, the monk offered him his food. Then every day after that whenever the tiger appeared, he would again offer it his food. The two eventually became friends, and thus, the tiger became tamed. The Tiger Taming Luohan was one of the two arhats thought to be added during the Qing Dynasty.
- The 18 Arhats are considered to be the original followers of (Gautama) Buddha who have followed the "Noble Eightfold Path" and attained enlightenment. They have reached Nirvana and are free of worldly afflictions. They were charged to protect the Buddhist faith.
