Vintage Alaskan Tlingit Totem, Raven. I got this as a gift many years ago from a friend who visited Alaska. I still have the original tag that went with it. According to the tag, "The Eagle and Raven clans are the two basic complementary tribal subdivisions of the Tlingit Indians. A Tlingit from either moiety must marry into the opposite clan. A child becomes the same clan as the mother. A raven or eagle will have another sub-clan under the main clan. Experts at woodcarving, Tlingits carved dugout canoes ranging 8' to 50' long of red cedar. The master carvers also carved the totem and inside house posts. Totem poles were never worshiped and had nothing to do with religion. They represented the basic method of recording events and history between generations. The original for this totem reproduction was carved by well known Tlingit carver, Ray Peck of Juneau. Individual pieces are hand painted by skilled Alaskan artists. The colors used in paintings are usually the traditional colors of red, blue green and black. However, sometimes brighter, contemporary colors can be used. These totems are hand crafted and hand painted. No 2 pieces are exactly alike . The wood like surface lends characteristic minor flaws which become part of the charm of the piece."

The totem has writing on the back that talks about the Raven and the sticker from the company that made it. In nice shape with no damage noted. Measures about 9.5" tall by about 4" wide.
