Late 1930s era fashion and hairdo. Stylized shapes and sinuous serpentine lines combine in this intriguing fine art original ceramic sculpture of a woman, glazed in yellow.
This hand built clay figure of an early 20th Century woman is reminiscent of the WPA (Works Progress Administration) aesthetic.
Though late 1930's and early 1940's women's fashions were very similar, a strong shoulder line, often padded, was one big difference in the 1940's. Therefore, I'm dating this piece to the late 1930's. The US was coming out of the Great Depression and the winds of WWII were blowing through the collective consciousness. And... true to the culture of the time (not to bring a lot of attention to oneself as the country was pitching in get out of the Depression), it is unsigned.
This is a wonderful artifact from the era of "The Greatest Generation," and a lovely early 20th century art piece.
