Rosa Parks needs no introduction, but I shall give her one anyway! While most famous for refusing to give up her seat to a white person on the bus in Montgomery, she was very active in the Civil Rights Movement before and after that trip. She was a leader in the local NAACP and helped organize the boycott spurred by her arrest on the bus that eventually led to the repeal of segregation (Jim Crow) laws in the south, and after moving to Detroit worked for an African-American congressman. She spent the decades after the Montgomery Bus Boycott continuing to fight for racial equality; she wrote several books on the subject, and received many prestigious awards for her work on civil rights. I remember being introduced to her in elementary school, with the usual story of how she refused to give up her seat, and my appreciation for her has only grown as I have learned the extent of her influence. She is most famous for that day on the bus, but deserves credit for much more than that!

The Rosa Parks shawl was completed on New Year's Eve of 2016, and I hope that it will be worn somewhere fun for NYE of 2017! The Malabrigo Silky store Merino yarn is so fabulously soft and shiny, and shows off Malabrigo's rich kettle-dyed colors to best effect. The beautiful pinks, reds, purples, and yellows of Archangel pair beautifully with Michele DuNaier's First Love pattern. This shawl would be lovely for a wedding or outdoor party, or any time you want to feel a little fancy!

CARE:
This shawl has been washed in Eucalan, which contains lanolin; this makes the animal fibers very soft and shiny, but if you are sensitive to lanolin, I can rewash it in Soak. (Please note that this will add a couple of days to processing time.) Any gentle handwash detergent will get it clean, but Eucalan and Soak are both no-rinse and therefore gentler on the fibers, so I recommend using one of them when washing your shawl. After letting your shawl soak, gently squeeze out the water (don't wring it!); you can also roll it up in a towel and gently press to get out more water, then shape it, spread it out, and lay it flat to dry.
