This maple vase is highly figured, with burls and ripple effects.
Burls (or burrs) are commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds. Burl formation is typically a result of some form of stress, such as an injury or a viral or fungal infection.
Ripple effects are the result of a tree being under stress, as it grows. For example, at the base of an old tree or under a heavy branch.
My bud vases are turned on the lathe and shaped by eye, using hand tools.
I work only with British-grown timber that is responsibly sourced. The trees have either fallen or have been professionally store felled, usually because they have reached the end of their lives or are storm damaged.
